Seminar Topic

Stuttering as Verbal Diversity: Making Shifts that Matter

It is a “neu” era in speech therapy! As our understanding of the neurodiversity of our students with communication challenges grows, SLPs want to know how to provide disability-affirming therapy for students who stutter. This session will help SLPs expand their mindfulness of how they talk about stuttering and the messages they send in therapy. Following a discussion of societal and internalized stigmas as they relate to stuttering, participants will learn how to provide stutter-affirming practices for students who stutter (and their families.)

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

• Identify at least four microaggressions that can occur during stuttering therapy

• Identify three shifts in therapy practices that create a supportive environment for students who stutter

• List three ways to integrate communication skills designed for easier communication rather than fluent speech
